Box Score 2 It was
Sarah DeMars' turn to dominate on the mound. The sophomore fired a 5-hit shutout and added 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to get the win in both games as Hamline's softball stayed in first place in the MIAC with 6-0 and 5-3 wins over St. Olaf in Northfield.
One of the hottest teams in D-III at the moment, HU has won 11 of its last 12 games and now stand 14-6 overall, 7-1 in the MIAC.
DeMars was terrific from the start on a gray day in Northfield. She retired the first 12 Ole hitters in a row before giving up a hit. She walked one and fanned two for her second blanking of the year.
Amanda Orrell – who would also play a key role in the second game – went 3-for-4, scored twice and knocked in a row.
Chelsea Koehn was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Â
Jenna Dushaw and
Mary-Clare Couillard also had two hits in the 13-hit offensive. HU broke the game open with four fourth inning runs.
The second game was much more dramatic. The Pipers were down 3-1 in the 5
th inning when Orrell, who now leads the team in batting average at .433, unloaded her second home run of the season – a two RBI shot that tied the game at 3.
Koehn opened the next inning with a double and came home on
Alli Ruter's one out single. Ruter had advanced to second on the throw to the plate. That proved to be important because
Samantha Mau followed with a single to score Ruter.
DeMars, who had picked up starter
Casey Anderson in the fifth inning, mowed down the Oles the rest of the way and the Pipers had their sweep to continue their best conference start in school history. (Anderson stretched her streak of walkless innings to 25.1).
Hamline returns to Meredith Field to face UW-River Falls (13-11) in a non-conference pair of games Thursday at 4:00 p.m. HU then heads down south (slightly) to play at St. Catherine Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The busy stretch concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. makeup doubleheader against Concordia at Meredith.
