Box Score 2 If the first day of the 2015 season is any indication for the Hamline volleyball team, we are in for quite a ride. The Pipers split a pair of lively matches at Hutton Arena, rallying from a two set hole to edge UW-River Falls, 3-2, before dropping a 3-1 affair to St. Scholastica.
Julia Zolnosky started off what would be a memorable day for her with 17 kills and
Jena Meyer added 11.
Amelia Jensen had good hands all day with 29 assists and
Miquel Green dove all over Hutton Arena to register 31 digs.
Marisa Franco also had a good opener with five service aces.
But it was the Pipers' improved defense that turned the tide against the Falcons. After 20-25 and 23-25 losses, Hu committed just three errors in winning the final three sets, 25-10, 15-17, 15-11. In the deciding set, HU was solid, hitting an astounding .571 percentage and committing no errors.
HU started out well against the Saints, hitting .461 in a 25-20 win in the first set of their nighttime match. But the Saints eked out key points at the end, breaking a pair of ties with two point bursts for 23-25 and 24-26 decisions. They took the last set, 19-25 to drop HU to 1-1 on the season.
Jensen was superb again with 49 assists. Zolnosky was on the attack again with 24 assists and Meyer added a dozen. Green led four players in double digits digs with 23.
Hamline now heads to Morris, Minn. this weekend for a troika of matches. HU will face Bethany Lutheran on Friday at 7:30 p.m. They tangle with Simpson (10:00 a.m.) and the host school UM-Morris (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
