Postier Gives W Hockey Dramatic Win

Box Score If you don't succeed at first, keep shooting. The Hamline women's hockey team did just that Saturday afternoon at Oscar Johnson Arena -- and their persistence paid off when Brede Postier scored 18 seconds into overtime to give the Pipers a hard fought 2-1 win over St. Mary's. The win improved the team's overall record to 7-8-2 under first year head coach Natalie Darwitz -- one more win than they achieved in the 2014-15 season. More importantly, it elevated their MIAC record to 4-5-1 and a tie with the cardinals for sixth place -- just two points behind Gustavus Adolphus, owners of fifth place and the last playoff spot.

Hamline came out shooting from the start. Chelsea Koehn's power play goal late in the period, set up by Dana Almquist and Jaci Reinke, staked the Pipers to the lead. With Mary Shefveland playing calmly in goal, HU maintained the 1-0 edge until Jane Hannula tried it for the Cardinals with an unassisted goal at 14:58 of the final frame.

That led to the overtime. Postier found herself in front of the goal, took a pass from Jaimee Nowicki and scored her fifth of the season to end the game. Ironically, her goal ties her with  Nowicki for the team lead in that department.

HU held the edge in shots on goal in all four periods, finishing with a 45-25 margin for the day. Shefveland recorded 24 saves for her first win of the season.

The Pipers get back on the ice next weekend against Bethel. Friday's game is in Blaine with a Saturday night rematch at Oscar Johnson. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
