Box Score Hamline women's hockey forward
Darby Dodds (5) is an opportunist. The junior took advantage of two openings when they presented themselves to score goals Saturday afternoon at Oscar Johnson Arena. As a result, Hamline took a 2-1 decision over St. Benedict and improved their MIAC record to 3-0 -- the best break from the gate in school history.
Annie Juergens added 30 saves in goal as HU improved to 5-2-0 overall -- also their best record at the seven-game mark of the season.
It was a come-from-behind effort. The Blazers grabbed control of the first period early, connecting on a power play goal seven minutes into the game. By the 10-minute mark, CSB had a 10-2 edge in shots. Hamline tightened up defensively but couldn't produce any offense and the period ended 1-0.
Things changed in the middle frame. It started at 6:38 when
Jena Kosley's pass found Dodds, who redirected the puck for her fourth goal of the season. HU carried the play for quite a while with no success but a potential roadblock came up when Dani Wright was penalized for interference at 17:24.Â
Bre Simon changed all that when she raced up the left wing and found Dodds streaking with her. Dodds finished off things nicely and HU had the goal it needed to take the lead.
St. Benedict kept after Juergens -- most notably in the last two minutes of the game with an extra attacker replacing the goalie -- but the freshman remained firm to give the Pipers the win. The Lino Lakes, Minn. native has won three of her four starts and is sporting a snappy 1.77 goals-against average and .944 saves percentage. Both numbers rank in the top three in the conference in those categories.
Hamline now gets a weekend off. They return to the ice December 2 at St. Thomas for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff. The teams meet up again on December 3 at Oscar Johnson Arena. Game time is 2:00 p.m.Â
