Box Score One sign of a team's improvement is the ability to win a tough game on the road. The HU women's hockey team did just that Friday when
Jessica Goldberg connected 3:45 into overtime for a 4-3 win at Wis-Eau Claire.
Bre Simon,
Jaimee Nowicki and
Sadie Baker (shorthanded) also scored for the Pipers, who are now 2-1 on the young season.
Annie Juergens kicked out 25 -- 11 in the third period alone -- for a win in goal in her first college game. A lot of credit is also due to the Piper penalty killers. HU killed off seven of the eight shorthanded situations they encountered in the game.
Simon got things off to a good start with the game's first goal at 13:23 but WEC evened matters before period's end. Goals by Nowcki and Baker gave HU a 3-1 edge but the Blugolds, who won their first two games of the year (including a 4-1 win at St. Thomas), got one back in the second period and tied the game on a PP early in the third. Juergens, a Lino Lakes, Minn. native, kept her team alive with her third period heroics.
In the overtime, Goldberg took a pass from
Jaimee Nowicki for the winner. Baker and Simon led Hamline's 22-shot attack with five each.
The Pipers now turn their attention to MIAC play. They face St. Olaf on November 11 in Northfield in their conference opener. Game time is 7:30 p.m.The teams face off the next afternoon at Oscar Johnson with a 2:00 p.m. faceoff.
