Softball Stays Undefeated in MIAC Play

4/10/2016 7:48:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The HU softball team got their busiest week fo the year off to an excellent start. The Pipers hit and pitched well in a 6-1, 7-0 sweep of St. Olaf Sunday at Meredith Field. Hamline improved to 4-0 in the MIAC (11-7 overall) by rapping out 13 hits in each game.

As is often the case, the Pipers' top three hitters did a lot of damage. Leadoff hitter Jamie Rubbelke had four hits, including a pair of home runs in the opener. Mary-Clare Couillard, batting second, also had four hits and scored three times. Amanda Orrell, who leads HU with an overall .441 mark, did her part with three hits. This time, the No. 4-5 combo of Aubree Douglas and Abbiee Annen chipped in with six RBIs.

Meanwhile, pitchers Casey Anderson and Sarah DeMars held up their end of the bargain, limiting the Oles to a single run (none after the first inning of the first game) and 13 hits.

In the lidlifter, it was Rubbelke who did put a charge into a pair of home runs and drove in three to lead the way. Four singled and a ground out produced three second inning runs that severed a 1-all tie. Rubbelke, a senior, took it from there with a pair of solo shots to left field. Anderson scattered seven hits and walked none to earn her seventh win of the season against just three losses.

In the second game, Annen's bases-loaded double scored three runs as part of a five-run third inning outburst. Douglas drove in a pair as well to back DeMars, who also went walkless in fashioning a six hit shutout.

The Pipers, who finished in second place in the MIAC last year, are one of just two MIAC teams yet to lose a league game. They will get tested again Tuesday when Gustavus Adolphus visits Meredith Field in a makeup doubleheader that will begin at 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, HU travels to St. Thomas (currently the other unbeaten team in the league). Hamline is at Bethel Saturday and hosts St. Catherine next Sunday at Meredith Field.
