Pipers Use Big Hits For Softball Split With Gusties

4/12/2016 7:39:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Who needs warm weather to get big hits? The Hamline softball team withstood snow flurries to hit a pair of home runs en route to an 8-4 win over Gustavus Adolphus in the opening game of a MIAC doubleheader Tuesday at Meredith Field. Unfortunately, the Piper bats were chilled in the second game in a 7-0 loss. Thus, HU is 5-1 in MIAC play and 12-8 overall on the season.

Although they were outhit 13-9 by the Gusties, HU had the big blows in the lidlifter against MIAC Pitcher of the Week Hannah Heacox. Amanda Orrell (pictured) went 3-for-4 with a pair of a runs scored and two RBI. Among her trio of hits: a third inning over the center field fence. Later in that same inning, Chelsea Koehn also went deep for a two-run shot to left field. Aubree Douglas also knocked in a pair of runs with a double.

Casey Anderson was excellent at the plate (2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base) and was also solid on the pitching rubber. The junior righty worked out of several possible messy jams and improved to 8-3 on the season because she walked just one batter. In all, Anderson threw 91 pitches, 68 of them for strikes.

Things didn't go as well in the second game. The Pipers managed just five hits -- two of them by Jamie Rubbelke -- and only had one runner reach third base.

Hamline continues a busy week Thursday when they visit St. Thomas for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. HU is at Bethel Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. pair of games and then return home Sunday to face St. Catherine at Meredith Field. That doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
