Box Score 2 All things considered, it was a very good day for Piper junior softballer Casey Anderson. The righthander scored four runs, banged out four hits and tossed a complete game 4-hitter as Hamline swept Bethel, 5-2, and 6-1. The double win meant the Pipers kept pace with the hierarchy in the MIAC. Hamline is tied for second in the loss column with just three and stands 14-10 overall with two weeks remaining in the conference season.
Anderson got plenty of offensive support. Jamie Rubbelke drove in four runs in the first game while Mary-Care Couillard (who raised her batting average 30 points on the day), Kelsey McWilliams (who jumped 82 points to .400) and Aubree Douglas had three hits each in the second game. In all, Hamline tattooed Bethel pitching for 27 hits while holding the defending regular season champs to just 10.
The Pipers lead the MIAC with an overall team batting average of .338.
Rubbelke, the Piper leadoff hitter, paced the offense in the opener. She doubled home two runs in the third inning to open the scoring for the day. In the next inning, she singled home a pair more to push her team leading RBI total to 19. Couillard, Amanda Orrell, Douglas, Anderson and Chelsea Koehn added two hits each. That was more than enough for Anderson, who walked none and fanned four to improve her won-loss record for the season to 9-4.
In the second game, Couillard singled to open the third inning and raced home on Orrell's double. Later, Couillard and McWilliams each drove in a pair of runs as part of a 15-hit assault. Sarah DeMars handled things on the mound, scattering six hits for the win, her fifth of thr season.
The pipers wrap up a busy week with a pair of games against St. Catherine Sunday at Meredith Field. The first pitch is set for 1:00 P.M. SCU, picked for fifth place in the coaches' preseason poll, is 9-3 in MIAC play and is a gaudy 22-3 overall.
