Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 It was as if Collin Olstad and Mitch Benson had made a pact to play Follow The Leader Saturday in soggy Moorhead. In Game 1, Olstad put the Hamline baseball team on his back with five RBI in a 6-3 win. In Game 2, Benson went one better with six runs knocked home as Hamline won 12-3 to earn a sweep and stay in the thick of the MIAC race.
HU is 8-4 in MIAC play and 18-10 overall.
Olstad wasted no time making an impression on the Cobbers. Dan Moro led off the game with a bunt single. One out later, Olstad doubled him home. CC responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning only to see Olstad deliver a sharp rebuke of his own – a three-run double in the top of the second that gave the Pipers the lead for good.
Pitchers Alex Bauermeister and Aaron Stoneberg took it from there. Bauermeister went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs and no earned runs to improve to 3-2. Stoneberg, who leads the MIAC with six wins, finished up for his second save.
In the second game, Benson opened the scoring with a second inning RBI double that chased Tyler Summers home. The Pipers added two more in that inning and – thanks in part to Benson's two RBI single in the third, scored four more for a 7-0 edge.
CC chopped back with three runs in the last of the third to make it 7-3. Benson had an answer for that – a two RBI double in the next inning that pushed the lead to 9-3. A bevy of pitchers took it from there in the rain and the Pipers sloshed to their six win in their last eight games.
Sam Petrick, who worked three scoreless innings in relief, earned the win. Rick Tormey had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. In all, Hamline banged out 14 hits and continues to stand second in the league in batting average.
The Pipers only have time to get into fresh uniforms and hit it again. They face Wisconsin-Superior Sunday, April 24 in a doubleheader at CHS Field. The first game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
