They really had to labor for it but Lilli Denison and Elizabeth Hughes scored hard fought wins for Hamline's women's tennis team against St. Catherine Friday. The pair won three set matches for the Pipers' lone points in a 7-2 loss. 

Denison, playing No. 4 singles, split a pair of 6-4 sets and then won the tiebreaker, 11-9. Hughes, playing at No. 5 singles, followed a similar route, splitting 6-2 sets before claiming a 10-6 tiebreaker win. 

HU had some tough setbacks as well. Denison and Natalie Pieterick fell in No. 3 doubles by a razor thin 9-8 margin. Emily Butler dropped a pair of 6-4 sets at No. 2 singles and both Maddie Muotka and Maggie Gibson endured 7-5 losses in their singles matches. 

Hamline, which returns to play April 16 against St. Mary's,  is now 5-9 overall, 1-5 in the MIAC.
