Baseball Sweep Propels Into Tie For MIAC Lead

5/1/2016 8:53:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Had Sherlock Holmes been at Parade Stadium Sunday to watch the Hamline baseball team sweep Augsburg in a doubleheader, he would probably have said, "The game's afoot, Watson."

Indeed, the Pipers' 5-1 and 11-4 victories over the Auggies stretched their winning streak to seven games in a row, a season high. More importantly, it moved them into a tie for first place in the MIAC with four games remaining. The team they are tied with is St. Thomas -- who happens to be their next opponent (Wednesday, May 4 at CHS Field, 2;30 p.m. start.) Both teams stand 12-4 in MIAC games. St. John's is next with a 13-5 mark.

The Pipers received excellent starting pitching and timely hitting in the sweep of the Auggies for the second year in a row.  On the mound, Alex Baumeister tossed a CG five-hitter in the first game win. Nolan Schoonveld scattered four hits in five innings to gain the win in the nightcap.

At the plate, Collin Olstad had four hits and knocked in three runs to stetch his current hiting streak to a career high 11 games in a row. Tyler Summers also had four hits as Hamline improved to 22-10 overall.

Game 1 was a tight affair for six innings. HU broke a 1-all tie in the fifth when Dan Moro singled, moved to second when Jacob Picht was safe on an error and moved home on two ground outs. In the seventh,  Picht and Olstad had back-to-back doubles that keyed a three run frame that broke the game open. Bauermeister walked three and fanned seven in improving to 4-2 on the season. His 2.70 ERA ranks fourth in the MIAC.

In the second game, HU broke a scoreless tie with three third inning runs. Augsburg got a run in the bottom of the inning but the Pipers broke things open with four sixth inning runs and three more in the eighth. Dan Moro drove in three runs and Mitch Benson plated two to pace a 14-hit attack.

Schoonveld gave way to Sam Petrick and Aaron Stoneberg to earn the win to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Hamline hasn't won a MIAC regular season baseball title since 1962. They last made the conference playoff in 2011 as a third place team. That year, they won the playoffs and advanced to their first NCAA tournament appearance in school history. The Pipers have eight games remaining. In addition to the UST games, the Pipers face Bethany Lutheran on Friday, May 6 at CHS Field (4:00 p.m.). On Saturday, May 7, they wrap up the MIAC slate at Carleton in a 1:00 p.m. pair. On Sunday, May 8, they will host Wisconsin-Superior at CHS in a 11:00 a.m. twinbill.
