Box Score 2 Another day, another big inning for the Hamline baseball team.
The Pipers unleashed a 10-run third inning en route to a 14-3 win at Carleton in the second game of a MIAC doubleheader Saturday. The win offset an 8-7, 8-inning loss in the first game and improved the playoff bound Pipers to a 13-7 MIAC mark. That currently places them in a tie for third place with St. John's. St. Mary's (12-6) is in second place and has a doubleheader against  Bethel Sunday.
Collin Olstad had a big day at the plate for Hamline, knocking in three runs in each game. Joe Setrum had two hits in each game as Hamline improved to 25-13 overall.Â
In the second game, HU was trailing, 1-0, when they sent 14 batters to the plate and broke the game open. Dan Moro walked and scored a run and later knocked in a pair of runs with a double. Jacob Picht continued his hot streak at the plate with a 2-for-4 game that improved his batting average to .425. He also scored three times.Â
Nolan Schoonveld improved to 5-0 on the season with a 4.2 inning start, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Nate Rubbelke threw 2.1 scoreless innings to finish things off.Â
In the first game, the Knights grabbed the lead with a six run second inning. The Pipers scored twice in the fourth and moved within 6-5 on Olstad's three-run homer in the fifth frame. A two out error in the sixth opened the gates for two more runs and gave HU a 7-6 lead. But the Knights tied the game in bottom of the seventh and scored in the first extra inning. HU pitchers fanned 10 Carleton hitters. Aaron Stoneberg (6-2) took the loss.
The Pipers are in action Sunday, May 8 with a pair of non-conference games against Wisconsin-Superior. Game time at CHS Field is 11:00 a.m. Hamline has clinched a MIAC playoff spot. Their first game is Thursday, May 12. They will face either St. Thomas, St. John's or St. Mary's at Cold Spring or Collegeville.
