Box Score Before the game, the Hamline women's soccer team honored six seniors playing their last game Wednesday at Paterson Field. After the game, the talk was a series of close calls and the outstanding play of freshman goalie
Kat Armstrong.
Armstrong increased her MIAC leading total for saves to 95 with a career best 17. Unfortunately, the 18th shot on goal found the back of the net in the last minute of the game and gave Gustavus Adolphus a hard fought 1-0 victory. The decision dropped the Pipers into seventh place in the MIAC with a 4-5-1 league standard. The Pipers' total of 13 points had them tied with Bethel. However, sixth place is occupied by St. Catherine, which has 15 points. By the luck of the schedule, Hamline plays at St. Catherine Saturday. A victory there would give them three points and move them one point ahead of the Wildcats into a playoff spot. HU would also need Bethel to lose or tie in their Saturday home game against St. Thomas. (Should both teams win, the Royals hold the third tiebreaker.)
This was a freewheeling game from the start. Armstrong, a freshman, had eight saves in the first half and her counterpart, Ashley Becker, recorded seven. The Pipers came close midway in the first session when
Arendje Louter just missed a corner from close range. In the second half,
Jordan Roderick-Fried banged a shot off the goalpost and
Siri Parker was stopped on a breakaway with less than three minutes to play. Armstrong was solid in her end, stopping six second half shots. She snared one in the first overtime and a pair in the second as well.
The Pipers had 16 total shots, 10 of which were stopped by Becker. Louter led the charge with six total shots, three of which were on goal. Parker,
Ellie Baxter and Roderick-Fried had two each on goal.
Hamline is 8-7-2 overall under first year head coach
Emily Cripe. The six seniors honored before the game (left to right in the above picture with their families) were
Brittany Beckman,
Anna Futterer,
Teylen Sheesley,
Marisa Smet,
Alicia Williams and
Lolly Higa.
