Box Score It's been a long time coming -- 37 games to be precise -- but Hamline has its first ever women's hockey victory over Gustavus Adolphus, which entered the night ranked No. 7 in the country.
And it was a very impressive one at that.
The Pipers exploded for four goals in less than nine minutes in the second period and went on to a 5-2 win over the Gusties before a thrilled crowd at Oscar Johnson Arena Friday night.
Jordan Hansen (9) scored twice with
Bre Simon,
Madison Gaffney and
Madison Kolbow joining in the fun -- the latter two getting their first college goals of their career as HU improved to 4-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAC. The 4-1-0 overall record is tied for the best start of a season in HU women's hockey history.Â
The best the Pipers had ever been able to do against the Gusties was a season-ending tie two years ago. Hansen started them on their way when she tipped a
Dani Perry shot in the net 6:38 into the game. The White Bear Lake, Minn. freshman stunned the Gusties with a second tally 32 seconds into the middle frame. Gaffney and Simon then tallied 75 seconds apart with Kolbow finishing off the outburst at 9:07. Hamline outshot GAC by 15-6 margins in each of the first two periods.Â
The visitors scored on a pair of power play goals in the third period to ruin
Annie Juergens' bid for a shutout. Ironically, the two Pipers with the most shots on goal --
Darby Dodds (7) and
Sarah Bobrowski (6) did not score. (Dodds did have an assist.) HU finished the game with a 36-22 overall margin in shots on goal.Â
As much fun as the win was, HU will have little time to celebrate it. The teams have a rematch Saturday, November 18 in St. Peter. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
