2/11/2017 5:05:00 PM

Box Score Bre Simon continues to cast a large shadow on the ice for the HU women's hockey team. The freshman defender scored her MIAC league leading 16th goal of the season Saturday in a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Catherine at Oscar Johnson Arena. The Pipers fired 50 shots at SCU goalie Abbi White. But the only tally belonged to Simon, who is now just four shy of the school record set by Sara Mickelson in 2005-06.

The Pipers clinched their first playoff spot in nine years Friday night with a 3-2 victory. The Wildcats were just as stubborn today, killing off seven player disadvantaged and keeping the Pipers at bay through two scoreless periods. SCU broke the deadlock 104 seconds into the third period. Simon, however, responded quickly, converting a pass from Taylor Ramthun at 4:26. In addition to leading the loop in goals, she is tied for the league lead in points at 26.

The game remained stuck at 1 the rest of the third period with White and Jaime Hathaway each standing firm in the net. In the overtime, Hamline fired five shots at White with no luck. SCU surrounded Hathaway and poked a shot home with 21 seconds left in the
game to gain the win.

Hamline is now 12-10-1 overall and 10-6-1 (20 points) in the MIAC. The latter mark has them in fourth place, three points ahead of fifth place St. Thomas, which plays Augsburg tonight. They trail third place Concordia by two points

HU finishes the regular season next weekend against Gustavus Adolphus (15-5-3, 11-2-3 MIAC). the teams face off in St. Peter on Friday, February 17. The regular  season finale is Saturday, February 18 at Oscar Johnson at 2 p.m. The first playoff game will either be February 23 or 25, depending on where Hamline finishes in the standings.
