2/11/2017 6:45:00 PM

Talk about learning on the job. Two days after one of the two teams favored to win the MIAC women's tennis championship -- Carleton -- the Pipers faced the other power of the league when they traveled to Gustavus Adolphus Saturday. HU dropped a 9-0 decision. They fared slightly better against UMAC power Northwestern, losing an 8-1 match that had several interesting sets to it.

Freshman Megan Anderson gave a good account of herself against the Gusties, losing her number four singles match by 6-1, 6-3. Anderson and Emily Butts fared the best in doubles, losing their number three match, 8-2.

That pair accounted for the Pipers' first set win of the year with a 9-7 at No. 3 doubles against the Eagles. Lilli Denison nearly pulled one off in number three singles when she shook a 6-0 first set loss for a 6-4 win in the second go-around. She lost the deciding set by 10-8. Anderson also came close at number five singles with a pair of 6-4 losses. the doubles tandems of Natalie Pieterick/Jordan Danielson and Denison/Emily Wollmuth put up spirited fights in 8-4 losses.

The Pipers (0-3)  aren't done with the heavy lifting yet. They take on Division II Bemidji State Sunday in Lakeville at 2 p.m.
