Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 You know you are having a good night when you score more runs in one game than you did in the first four games of the season.
Such was the case at US Bank Stadium Monday night as Hamline's baseball team exploded for five runs in one inning and six in another in a 14-0 decision over Buena Vista that wrapped up a sweep of a doubleheader. Couple that outburst with an 8-3 win in the opener and HU will take a 4-2 won-loss record into its annual Arizona swing next week.
Rick Tormey and
Nick Kukurich had three hits each as part of Hamline's 13 hit assault on four BV pitchers. The Pipers took advantage of some miscues in the field. In the first inning, an error opened the door and back-to-back-to back RBI doubles by Tormey,
Devin Rodgers and Kukurich resulted in an early 5-0 lead. In the fifth, another error opened the floodgates and HU poured through with 10 batters and half a dozen runs.
That was more than enough for
Nolan Schoonveld, who pitched five shutout innings and helped himself at the plate with a pair of hits and a RBI. Even Pipers who didn't get hits got in on the action.
Jacob Picht scored three runs without getting a hit.
In the opener,
Alex Bauermeister tossed six solid innings. Picht had three hits, scored twice and knocked in a run with Tormey and Dominic Dandrea adding two hits and a RBI apiece. Hamline broke away from a 2-all tie in the fourth inning on RBi markers by Tormey, Dandrea and Picht.
It was an impressive explosion against one of the teams expected to compete for top honors in the Iowa Conference.
Hamline is off until March 17 when they face Kalamazoo in the first of ten games in Tucson, Arizona.
