Clutch Pitching and Hitting Gives Piper BB Split with Concordia

4/22/2017 6:29:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 One of the beautiful things about sport -- and baseball, in particular -- is its unpredictability. No two games -- even when they are played on the same day within minutes of each other -- are alike.

Exhibit A: Hamline's doubleheader split with Concordia at CHS Field.

In the opener, the Pipers were held to four hits in a 4-0 loss. Jacob Picht had a single and a double. Training 3-0 in the third with runners on first and third, Collin Olstad drilled a shot to deep right center that Cobber right fielder Nate Leitz hauled down with a terrific catch and the Cobbers went on from there for the win.

In the nightcap, however, HU scored five runs in the first inning and went on to rap out 15 hits -- their second highest total of the season -- in a 9-4 victory.

It was game full of unusual occurrences that included a baseball rarity: a four inning save for reliever Zach Munsterman. Five of the first Pipers who came to bat in that first inning scored. (The one who didn't hit -- Nolan Schoonveld -- hit a sacrifice fly.) Jake Dujmovic  drove in a pair of runs with a double. Dominic Dandrea, who later would drive home the last two HU runs with a single, plated one with a perfect squeeze bunt and Hunter Messerschmidt finished it off with a RBI single.

The Cobbers, who are battling Macalester for fourth place, responded with three runs in the third inning. They were finally stifled by reliever Sam Petrick, the eventual winning pitcher. HU added a fourth inning run with CC responding likewise in the fifth. Munsterman, who has pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief in the opener, entered the fray in the sixth inning. The righty gave up two hits and a walk but none of the runners moved past first base. His hard day's labor lowered his ERA by over two runs. He threw 91 pitches in the two games, 60 of them for strikes.

Dandrea's single finished off a three-run seventh inning that gave HU the final cushion.  Joe Setrum had three hits to lead the 15-hit assault. Hamline improved to 11-19 overall, 4-8 in the MIAC.

Hamline is on the road for their next three doubleheaders. First up: a Tuesday, April 25 date at St. Olaf (2:30 p.m.). HU plays at St. Thomas on Saturday, April 29 (1:00 p.m.).
