Box Score 2 They needed a second game rally to do it. But all's well that ends well. Hamline's softball team used a pair of four run innings to defeat St. Mary's twice in Winona Saturday, 5-1 and 8-5. The Pipers improved to 12-4 in the MIAC, staying in third place, just one game league leader St. Benedict in the loss column. HU is now 17-11 overall and has won seven of its last nine games.
For th e second straight day, righty
Sarah DeMars shut down an opponent from the mound. The righty scattered five hts, walked two and struck out six to gain the victory in the first game. The Pipers offered some quick offensive support, scoring four runs before they even got into the field.
Casey Anderson's two RBI triple.
Sydney Fransiscus singled a run home and a fourth scored on an error. In the fifth,
Chelsea Koehn, moved to second on a
Mary-Clare Couillard sacrifice bunt (a team high fifth) and raced home when Aubree Douglas singled. DeMars took a shutout into the seventh when SMU scores its lone tally.
DeMars started Game 2 and was victimized by a three-error inning that led to five SMU runs. Anderson took over in the inning, getting the final outs. The senior allowed jus one hit, walked none and fanned two to earn the win. Down 5-1 in the third inning, HU used the long ball to tie the game with the second four spot of the day. Anderson plated one with a sacrifice fly.
Kira Krueger then unloaded a two-run homer to make it 5-4. One out later,
Caitlin Jones did likewise to tie the game. it was the first homers of the season for both players. One inning later, Douglas doubled and
Abbie Annen walked. A wild pitch moved them up and a subsequent error allowed both runners to score. Anderson then helped her cause with a solo home run --her team high fourth -- and HU had their sweep.
They won't get a lot of time to revel in it. The Pipers get back on Meredith Field Sunday to face Concordia. The team's seniors will be honored between games. It is Alumni Day as well. The first game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
