Box Score 2 Zach Smith continues to haunt St. Olaf. During the winter, he hit a last-second jumper to lift Hamline's men's team to a home court basketball win over the Friday, he dazzled the Oles again, this time with a three-hit complete game in a 5-1 baseball win in Northfield.
St. Olaf rallied to win the second game, 5-4.
The junior lefthander walked just one batter and struck out five to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Collin Olstad scored four runs and
Rick Tormey and
Jake Dujmovic each drove in a pair to pace the Pipers' offense. It was a 1-1 game in the third inning when Olstad walked and Tormey tripled him home. In the fifth, Tormey got an easier RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run and make it 3-1. Dujmovic hit a pair of sacrifice flies for the final two runs. Smith retired the last 13 batters in a row to polish off his gem.
In the second game, Dujmovic broke a 1-1 tie in the 6th inning with a RBI grounder. Olstad singled in two runs in the 7th to make it 4-1 but the Oles rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-4 lead. Hamline put the tying run on base in the ninth but couldn't get it home and fell to 12-20 overall, 5-9 in the MIAC.
HU plays at St. Thomas Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
Jacob Picht had a hit in the first game and a pair of walks in the second to push his one-base streak to 12 straight games.
