Box Score 2 Casey Anderson threw her second straight shutout and
Aubree Douglas reached base six straight times as Hamline's softball team split a pair of games with Macalester Wednesday at Meredith Field. Anderson, a senior, snuffed out the Scots on five hits for a 6-0 win in the nightcap that somewhat eased the memory of a 5-4 loss in the first game.
The righty walked none, fanned three and personally retired the only runner that came close to scoring to even her season record at 4-4.
Kira Krueger doubled home a pair of runs in a three-run first frame that gave HU an early edge -- and the Pipers never looked back in improving their MIAC won-loss record to 5-1 (tying for second place, a game out of first) and the overall mark to 10-8.
Mary-Clare Couillard had a pair of singles to move to within two hits of third place all-time in school history with 181 career hits.
Delaney Kohler also tripled home a run as HU led 5-0 after two innings and held the Scots at bay the rest of the way. The nearst Macalester came to scoring happened in the fourth inning when pitcher Morgahn Bean tried to score from third when a pitch eluded Douglas, who was catching. However, Douglas retired the ball and threw to Anderson covering the plate for the out. Anderson then retired 10 batters in a row before giving up a two out single in the seventh inning. It was her third shutout of the season and lowered her ERA for the year to 3.12.
Douglas was on base twice in the second game via walks. In the opener, she was was on all four times she batted with a double, two singles and a walk.
Sarah DeMars was victimized by three errors and allowed three unearned runs in taking the loss, dropping to 6-3 overall. The Pipers were trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning when
Abbie Annen and Krueger singled home runs to briefly tie the game. Unfortunately, Macalester went ahead in the sixth and Hamline couldn't get the equalizer. They had their chances, though, leaving 10 runners on base.
Hamline returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at St. Olaf. Game time for the twinbill is 1:00 p.m. HU hosts St. Thomas Sunday at Meredith Field for a pair, also starting at 1:00 p.m.
