Box Score 2 She is the Piper softball team's leadoff hitter ... and also is the leading hitter in the MIAC.
Chelsea Koehn homered twice for Hamline Tuesday in the Pipers' season-ending 9-3, 9-8 doubleheader loss at St. Catherine. The first baseman is hitting .464 in MIAC games (and .435 overall) for HU, which finished the year 21-13 overall and 16-6 in league games.Â
The Pipers will be the third seed and face the Wildcats Friday at St. Thomas in a first round playoff game at 5:00 p.m. It is the third straight season HU has advanced to the MIAC postseason.Â
A five-run third inning was too much to overcome in the first game of the twinbill Tuesday. HU trailed 1-0 in the third when RBI singles by
Abbie Annen and
Casey Anderson pushed the Pipers to a 2-1 advantage. SCU hit back with a five spot (four of the runs were unearned) to grab a 6-2 lead. Koehn responded in the fourth with a booming homer to center field but SCU, which needed to win at least one game to make the weekend tournament, held on for the win.
The second game was a wild one. Abbie Douglas, who had three hits in the game, knocked in three runs to give HU a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning. SCU scored four in the fifth inning for a 6-4 but Hamline came back again as Annen smoked a RBI double.Â
The Wildcats stretched the lead to 8-5 but Koehn brought the Pipers back with a two out, three RBI homer in the top of the seventh inning -- her team leading fifth of the season -- to tie the game at 8. SCU won it in the first extra inning.
The Michigan native has now garnered hits in 13 straight games, going 19-for-40 in that time span.Â
In addition to Koehn,
Mary-Clare Couillard had three hits on the day and now has 197 for her HU career.Â
