Box Score 2 Jacob Picht is doing for the Hamline baseball team what all coaches devoutly hope their leadoff hitters
can do -- get on base and cause havoc. The senior first basemen stretched his consecutive on-base streak to 16 games in a row by doing so in both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday against St. Mary's in Winona. HU lost 2-1 in eight innings and 4-2 but Picht held up his end nicely by getting on base five times (three hits, two hit by pitch).
The Oakdale, Minn. native is hitting a solid .352 with an impressive .439 on-base percentage.
He got the Pipers going in Game 1 Wednesday with a solo home run in the sixth inning that broke a scoreless tie. Unfortunately, the Cardinals tied the game on a two-out RBI single in the seventh and won it in the first extra inning.
In the nightcap, Picht opened the game with a single but was forced at second base by
Joe Setrum.
Nolan Schoonveld walked and
Domenic Dandrea continued his late season surge with a RBI single to give HU an early lead. The Cardinals rallied for a 4-1 lead but the Pipers refused to give in quietly. In the seventh inning,
Rick Tormey opened the inning and moved to second when Picht was plunked by a pitch for the second time in the game.
Collin Olstad walked to load the bases and Setrum's sacrifice fly made it 4-2. Schoonveld was hit by a pitch to reload the bases but the last two Pipers were retired to end the game.
Hamline is now 12-24 overall, 5-13 in the MIAC. They will finish the season at CHS Field this weekend with doubleheaders against MIAC foe Carleton on Saturday, May 7 and a non-conference set with Bethany Lutheran on Sunday, May 8. The first game is set for 1:00 p.m. both days.
