Setrum Has Big Day as Baseball Sweeps Carleton

5/6/2017 7:18:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The sight in the picture -- Hamline baseball outfielder Joe Setrum on base -- is one that Carleton may not forget for some time to come. The senior had five hits, drove in five runs and was on base seven times as the Pipers  swept away the Knights, 13-1 and 8-3, Saturday in their final MIAC games of 2017 Saturday at CHS Field. The Pipers used big innings in each game to secure the wins and finish 7-13 in conference play.

Setrum was 3-for-3 with four RBI, including a booming three run homer, in the opener. HU broke the game open by sending 13 batters to the plate -- eight of whom scored -- in a wild third inning. Setrum's fourth four-bagger of the year kickstarted the explosion. Later, Jacob Picht drove in a pair of runs with a hit while Hunter Messerschmidt, Collin Olstad and Setrum (the second time around) added solo efforts. The offensive fireworks somewhat overshadowed a superb winning start for pitcher Nolan Schoonveld. The righty allowed only a bad bounce single and three walks, fanning a season high five batters in five scoreless innings of work.

The second game was tamer but still had its share of fireworks. HU led 1-0 in the third inning when Picht, Olstad and Setrum opening the inning with singles. All eventually scored for a 4-0 lead. The Knights got going against starter (and winning pitcher) Evan Bayer with three sixth inning runs but the Pipers answered back with four in the bottom of the inning to finish the scoring. Domenic Dandrea continued his excellent second half of the season with a two RBI single. Picht scored twice in the game and leads the MIAC with 39. Sam Petrick replaced Bayer and went the rest of the game, allowing just one hit for the save.

Hamline is now 14-24 overall. They close out the season Sunday against Bethany Lutheran in a non-conference doubleheader at CHS. The first game commences at 1:00 p.m.
