Seniors Send Off Baseball Season With Stylish Sweep

5/7/2017 6:16:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Hamline baseball team made its last weekend of 2017 one to remember for a long time. On a day when the team honored its 12 seniors, the Pipers racked up 22 runs on 26 hits and ended the year with a sweep of Bethany Lutheran, 15-0 and 7-4, at CHS Field Sunday.

Several of the seniors playing for HU for the last time played big roles.
To wit:
  • Jacob Picht went 6-for-8 with three doubles, five runs scored and two RBI, finishing the season with an eight-game hitting streak
  • Collin Olstad had four hits, two doubles and two RBI
  • Joe Setrum knocked in three runs
  • Leo Zerr went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs
  • Domenic Dandrea went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the first game.
  • Zach Munsterman earned the win in relief in the second game, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings.
The Pipers, who scored 21 runs on Saturday in a sweep of  Carleton the day before, used a pair of five run innings to roll to the win in the opener. They batted around in both innings. Eight of the nine hitters in the batting order registered hits. That was more than enough for junior lefthander Zach Smith, who tossed 5.2 scoreless innings before giving way to seniors Matt Rotzien and Michael Pietruszewski, who finished off the blanking.

The second game started well with the first four batters rapping out hits and HU grabbing a 2-0 lead. The Vikings turned the tables with a four run fourth inning. Nate Rubbelke, who relieved starter Jake Dujmovic, finally quelled the tide. Zerr's RBI single in the bottom of the frame cut the BLC lead to 4-3. It stayed that until the sixth when pinch-hitter Nick Kukurich, Picht and Olstad delivered RBI singles and Setrum chipped in with a sacrifice fly. Munsterman gave up a pair of hits in the seventh but sealed the deal so Hamline could finish the season with a 16-24 overall won-loss record. It was victories 83 and 84 for this group of a dozen.

Picht led HU with a .369 batting average and a .604 slugging percentage. . Smith and Sam Petrick, another senior, led the pitching staff in victories with four and went 1-2 in ERA ay 2.96 and 3.09.

As for the future, freshman Devin Rodgers stole 16 bases, third best in the MIAC.
