Box Score The Hamline women's hockey team picked an excellent day to welcome back their alumni.
Bre Simon broke a 12 year old record and the Pipers kept their home ice perfect with a solid 4-1 win over Bethel Saturday afternoon at TRIA Rink. Simon scored a pair of goals to up her season total to 22, breaking the tie she had held with Sara Mickelson, who had scored 20 times in the 2005-06 season.
Madison Gaffney and
Sarah Bobrowski also scored as HU improved to 14-3-2 overall. Their 9-2-1 MIAC mark, good for 19 points, maintains their first place standing, a point ahead of St. Thomas and two ahead of Gustavus Adolphus.
Although the Pipers controlled much of the play and outshot the Royals, 39-18, for the game, this was tough sledding all afternoon.
Simon got things going 8:31 into the game, finishing off a three way play with
Darby Dodds (who had three assists on the day) and Bobrowski. In the second period, Gaffney whistled a shot through traffic to make it 2-0 and Simon added a power play marker from close range. Bobrowski, who also had two assists and continues to lead the conference with 38 points (Dodds has 37 and Simon 36) capped the scoring in the third period. HU goalie
Annie Juergens was a mere 9.4 seconds away from a shutout when the Royals scored their lone goal. Juergens had 17 saves for the game to earn the win and lowered her goals-against average to 1.42.
Hamline is 10-0-0 in home games this season. They won six games at TRIA in January.
The next three games, however, are on the road. Next weekend, the Pipers head north to Moorhead to take on Concordia for a pair of games. The teams play Friday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. and return on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
