Box Score At the start of the men's basketball season, there was some wonderment as to who would fill the scoring void left by last year's senior class. Thursday, at Northwestern, head coach
Jim Hayes found out some answers.
Ethan Scheuring (33 points) and
Jake Larson (17) had career best scoring games for the Pipers, who dropped a 91-89 overtime decision at Ericksen Center. Scheuring added nine rebounds (
Connor Knutson led with 11 boards) but the Pipers fell to 1-2 overall in 2018-19.
Hamline got off to a good start, at one point grabbing a 10-point lead in the first half. The two teams went into the locker room with Hamline holding a 37-31 edge. HU pushed the lead back to 10 but the Eagles rallied with a 18-4 run to grab the lead at 51-47 midway in the second half.
From there, the game rocked back and forth with both teams taking turns grabbing momentum. An
Isaac Brooks free throw gave HU a 77-75 lead but UNW tied the game with under a second to play to force the extra session.
In the overtime, Brooks, who finished with 13 points hit an immediate basket. Scheuring followed with a layup for an 81-77 edge. UNW scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to take the lead. Larson's three pointer with 46 seconds left pushed Hamline ahead 89-87 but UNW came back with a trey of its own and added a free throw with eight seconds left to end the scoring.
Hamline has one more test before starting MIAC play November 28 against Gustavus Adolphus. North Central (Minn.) will come to Hutton Arena on Tuesday, November 20. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
