Box Score Jordan Hansen and Mckenna Hulslander shared the spotlight for the HU women's hockey team in a 3-3 OT tie with St. Thomas Friday. Hansen, a freshman, scored twice for the Pipers and Hulslander, also a first year player, was superb in goal with 40 saves. HU kept their unbeaten status at home and improved to 18-3-3 overall, 13-2-2 in the MIAC. Going into Saturday's season finale at St. Thomas, the Pipers are in first place in the MIAC and hold a one - point lead over the Tommies and Gustavus Adolphus, a 3-1 winner at St. Benedict.
It was a fast paced affair from the start. The Tommies held an 11-5 edge in shots in a scoreless first period. Hulslander was sharp from the start, stopping Kaylee Druk on a breakaway in the period's best scoring chance.
The scoreless game changed directions in a 81 second span in the second period. UST struck first at 5:53 but Hansen replied with a solo effort 67 seconds later. Unfortunately, UST matched that feat and regained the lead at 7:14. Hansen evened matters with her second of the game on the Pipers' lone power play of the night at 11:17. (
Bre Simon had an assist on that play. That gave her 80 career points and makes her the school's time leader in points. She had been tied with Melanie Leville, who played here from 2006-09 and Alli Miller, who played from 2007-10 with 79 points.)
The Tommies grabbed a lead midway through the third period.
Darby Dodds got the equalizer at 13:04. (
Sarah Bobrowski had an assist on that play. That gave 25 in MIAC games, which ties a league record done on three other occasions.)
That ended the scoring but not the chances. Hansen had the best one, ringing a shot off the crossbar late in the third period. Hulslander stood tall at her end as well with 17 saves in the third period alone. Her 40 saves is a career high.
The teams will settle matters once and for all Saturday, February 17 at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. A HU win would give the Pipers a first-ever MIAC regular season championship. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
