Softball Bats Its Way to Sweep of Saints

3/5/2018 6:52:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It was a lovely day to play softball ... indoors. While snow and wind raged outside, Hamline took full advantage of the indoor surroundings of the West St. Paul Dome to knock out 24 hits and sweep its season opening doubleheader from St. Scholastica, 7-6, in 10 hectic innings and 8-3.

Kira Krueger and Aubree Douglas led the hit brigade with four hits each with Abbie Annen and Delaney Kohler adding three apiece.

If the season opener is any indication, 2018 may be a wild, bumpy ride. The Pipers grabbed a 3-0 lead, gave it up to a 4-4 tie, regained the lead at 5-4 and was one out away from a seven inning win before CSS tied the game. It took three extra innings from there to get a verdict, including a ninth inning in which team scored a run. The game was finally decided when Megan Rubbelke sprinted in from third base to score on a wild pitch in the last of the 10th.

Alex Molloy, who relieved Krueger on the mound in the fifth inning, got the win. The freshman ended up going 5.2 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs.

In the nightcap, HU broke a 2-all deadlock with four third inning runs and never looked back. Riley Husom went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Krueger, Douglas, Rubbelke and Kohler had two hits each. Sabrina Warden started on the mound and went five innings to earn the victory. She walked nobody and fanned one. In the second inning, she retired the Saints on just three pitches.

The Pipers return to the comfortable confines of West St. Paul Tuesday to face Wisconsin-Superior. The doubleheader begins at 12:30 p.m.
