Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 It produced the only run Hamline would score all night against Bethel in Collegeville Sunday night. But it was enough to give the Pipers a split of the doubleheader. Elliot Engen lined a one out single with the bases loaded in the last of the seventh inning to lift HU to a 1-0 win over the Royals in the second game of the twinbill. The walk-off win offset the opener, a 5-0 Bethel victory.
The split left the Pipers at 3-3 in MIAC play, 10-12 overall.
Evan Bayer threw six solid innings as a starter, holding the Royals to just one hit.
Zach Smith, who pitched a scoreless seventh, ended up the winning pitcher and is now 3-3 on the season.
The winning rally started innocently as
Devin Rodgers was safe on an error. With one out, a
Hunter Messerschmidt single, moved Rodgers to second. A passed ball moved both runners up 90 feet. The Royals decided to walk
Jake Dujmovic intentionally. Engen promptly ruined that strategy with a rocket to center field to earn the split and set off a wild celebration in the infield. It was the Pipers' first shutout of the season.
In the opener, BU scored four times before the Pipers even got to the plate.
Brandon Rushmeyer had an excellent relief effort, going five innings, allowing a solo run on five hits.
HU will be back in Collegeville on Monday, April 23 to face St. John's in a doubleheader that is slated to start at 7:00 p.m. The matchup was relocated from CHS Field, so HU will be the home team for both games.
