SB Gets To .500 With Sweep of Scots

4/27/2018 7:41:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It was better late than never for the Hamline softball team. The Pipers made their first venture onto Meredith Field in 2018 a successful one, sweeping Macalester, 13-5 and 5-2, Friday afternoon. With the double win, Hamline moved even at 15-15 on the overall season. More importantly, they improved to 8-8 in MIAC play to stay within sight of a playoff spot.

HU won in two very separate ways. In the opener, they swung big sticks, rapping out 11 hits. Delaney Kohler (pictured), Megan Rubbelke and Aubree Douglas led the way with two each. Douglas and Angela Wollmuth knocked in three runs apiece. The Scots jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to see Wollmuth's two RBI single in the bottom of the frame give Hamline a 3-2 lead. MAC scored three in the third for a 5-3 lead and Hamline responded decisively with four runs to take control. Blair Tommelein had a two RBI double as the key blow. The Pipers scored three times in the fourth and fifth frames to end the game on the eight-run rule. Alex Molloy went the distance to improve to 6-5 on the season.

HU made the most of a little in the second game. The Pipers had just four hits. One of those was Kohler's two RBI single as part of a three run second inning. In the third, the Pipers combined a Douglas double, two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead. (Douglas reclaimed the MIAC lead in batting average with a .467 mark.) Sabrina Warden started and with the first 4.1 innings to earn the win. Kira Krueger went the last 2.2 innings and recorded the save.

HU tangles with one of the teams vying for a playoff spot Saturday when they visit Carleton, currently tied with Augsburg for fifth place at 9-9 in Northfield. (The top six teams make the playoffs.) The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
