Box Score 2 Waiting 12 days to play a game did nothing to dull
Aubree Douglas' batting skills. The junior softballer rasied her season batting average 83 points with a 6-for-7 morning as Hamline used a pair of sixth inning rallies to open MIAC play with a 3-1, 6-4 sweep of a twinbill over St. Mary's on Sunday in Rochester, Minn.
The Pipers were awake early for a 7:30 a.m. start but it took until the sixth inning -- when HU scored all three of their runs -- get the offense totally in gear.
Sophomore hurler
Kira Krueger allowed just three hits in the opener. The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead until
Blair Tommelein singled in a run to tie the game. Douglas, the next batter, followed with her third hit of the game -- a single -- to plate two more runs. Krueger dispatched SMU in order in the seventh and that was that.
Angela Wollmuth went 2-for-3 with a run scored to support the Pipers' 10-hit attack.
Alex Molloy took the rubber for game 2. The freshman scattered 11 hits but walked just one and fanned five to gain the victory. The Pipers helped her out as well with two double plays.
HU was down 2-1 in the fourth when Wollmuth, who had two hits in this game as well, led off with a single. After an out,
Riley Husom and Tommelein walked. Douglas was retired but
Abbie Annen propelled Hamline into the lead with a bases-clearing double to left.
SMU fought back to tie the game at 4 in the top of the 6th. HU, however, responded quickly. With one out, Douglas singled for her sixth hit of the day and
Becca Liebelt ran for her. Annen was safe on an error. With two out, Krueger singled home a run to break the tie. Pinch-hitter
Ramsey Hare added insurance with a RBI single. Molloy surrendered a pair of hits but got the necessary final out and the Pipers could finally rest with a hard-earned sweep.
Depending on what happens weather wise, HU is scheduled to get back on the field again on Thursday, April 12 at St. Benedict at 3:30 p.m.
