Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The pitching was fine but the bats came up just short for the HU baseball team at Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday. Hamline dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Gusties, 3-0 and 4-3 Wednesday in St. Peter to drop to 13-19 overall on the season. HU is now 6-10 in MIAC play and will need to win their final four conference games to draw even for the season.
Mitch Benson went 2-for-3 and the trio of
Nick Kukurich,
Cullen Buck and
Jeremy Szura each had a hit and a RBI in the narrow loss in Game 2. Benson and Buck also had hits in the opener, a game that was marred by four HU errors. Benson now leads the Pipers with a .376 batting average and has a nine-game hitting streak.
In the opener,
Nolan Schoonveld went the distance on the mound, allowing just two hits. All three runs were unearned. The Gusties scored a run in the third inning and two more in the sixth.
In the second game, Kukurich's solo homer in the second inning gave HU an early lead. GAC came back for a 2-1 advantage but Szura evened matters with a RBI single in the fourth inning and Buck pushed HU ahead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth frame. The Gusties, however, scored solos in the fifth and sixth to take the lead. In the seventh, Benson singled to open the inning and moved to second on Schoonveld's sacrifice bunt but could not advance farther.
The Pipers will look to shake this one off Thursday, May 3 when they play a non-conference game at Northwestern in Roseville. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
