Leah Schwartzman Named MIAC Women's Hockey AOW; d3hockey.com Team of the Week

Leah Schwartzman got the 2019 portion of her women's hockey season off to a flying start. The senior scored in all three games Hamline played and added seven assists as the Pipers swept by Saint Anselm, 6-2 and then won two games from St. Norbert, 6-2 and 6-0. The MIAC took notice of Schwartzman's offensive output and named her the league's Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week on Monday,January 7

The Hopkins, Minn. senior plays on the Pipers' top scoring line with Bre Simon and Jordan Hansen. On Thursday, Schwartzman set up three goals and scored the last one in the win over the Hawks. She had a goal and two assists in the Saturday win over the Green Knights and went one better with a goal and three assists the next afternoon. She was a +7 in those games and now stands tied for third on the team (and the MIAC) with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points. 

Schwartzman is the third Piper to be honored by the league this year. Earlier, Simon and goalie McKenna Hulslander earned recognition as AOW recipients. 

Three days later, Schwartzman received another honor when she was named tol the d3hockey.com Women's Team of the Week. She is the second Piper this year to be so honored. To read the release on the team click here. 

Hamline, 11-1-1 overall and ranked No. 7 in the d3hockey.com Top Ten poll (No. 8 on USCHO.com), is tied for third place in the conference with a 5-1-0 mark. The Pipers return to the MIAC wars this weekend with a pair of games against Augsburg. Friday's game is in Minneapolis (7:00 p.m.). The rematch is the next day at TRIA  Rink in St. Paul at 1:30 p.m.
