Box Score It was a history-making night for the Hamline men's hockey team. They just wished it was a little better history.
For the first time ever, Hamline went to a shootout in a MIAC game. Gustavus Adolphus outscored them, 2-1 to grab two points. But the Pipers get one MIAC point for what the NCAA officially calls a 3-3 tie.Â
Playing at their old home rink (Drake Arena), HU scored less than a minute into the game and stretched their lead to 3-1 after two periods. But the Gusties rallied for two goals in the third period and then won their second straight shootout encounter.
Charlie Adams scored his first two goals as a Piper andÂ
Jaycob McCombs also recorded his first college tally.Â
John Sellie-Hanson had 34 saves in goal. Included in that total was a spectacular glove grab in the final minute of play that forced the extra period.
Adams got things going early with a goal 55 seconds into the game. The Gusties tied it up only to see McCombs be in the right place at the right time to pick a corner late in the first period to make it 2-1.Â
Adams upped the margin with a whistler under the crossbar in the second period. However, GAC came back for a pair of goals in the third period to send the game into overtime. The Pipers got a late power play in OT but couldn't connect, sending the game to a first-ever shootout.
After Hamline'sÂ
Andrew Herbert was stopped, Gustavus came down and scored.Â
Kevin Novakovich evened the shootout at 1 but the Gusties connected on their second shot as well. Adams was stopped on his try to tie the shootout. It was the conference opener for the Pipers, who stand 3-3-1 overall. Gustavus has six points on a 1-0-2 mark (3-2-2 overall). The teams resume their home and home series Saturday night in St. Peter at 7:05 p.m.
