Box Score Ties are often a frustrating end to a soccer game.
But there are exceptions to that rule. One of those occurred Saturday at Paterson Field as Hamline's women's soccer team earned their first point ever against Macalester with a 2-2 double OT deadlock.
There were heores aplenty for the Pipers, who improved to 4-1-2 overall, 0-1-1 in the MIAC.
To wit:
- There was Aubrey Stenson (13) , who opened the scoring 24 minutes into the game.
- There was Aileen Scheibner, who continued the scoring six minutes later.
- There was Amy Ramras, who entered the game suddenly, allowed a goal but later came up with big saves to preserve the verdict. \
More on Ramras shortly.
Stenson started things when she finished off a three way passing play with
Grace Nichols and
Kriusten Berr in front of the Mac goal. Scheibner made it 2-0 after collecting a
Corinne Henning pass and slipping it into the net.
Thingsw were going just fine for the Pipers at that point. Three minutes later, however, Ramras was suddenly called upon to relieve Hamline GK
Erin Urbanowicz, who had been given a red card for a tackle on a Mac player who had gotten in the clear. Ramras had to step in and face a penalty kick. The Scots converted and it was 2-1 at halftime.
The visitors scored in the first minute of the second sessiuon and began to apply more pressure at Ramras. But she held firm, recording two saves in the second half and another one in the first overtime. The Pipers had the only chance of the second extra session but to no avail.
Thus it was that HU earned an important point in the standings while ending a 23-game losing streak to the Scots. . The tie is even more impressive when you consider
Malya Hirshkowitz, Hamline's leading scorer, missed the game due to injury, Last year, HU lost four MIAC games -- all by one goal. If they had tied any of those four, they would made the playoffs. One of those four games was at Macalester where they led 2-0 but fell 3-2.
This time was different.
HU now takes a break from MIAC play to host Northwestern (Roseville) Tuesday at Paterson Field. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
