Sellie-Hanson Comes Up Big In M Hockey Opener

10/31/2015 11:07:00 PM

Box Score It may have been the first game of the season but Hamline men's hockey goalie John Sellie-Hanson was in midseason form Saturday. The junior stopped 38 shots in 65 minutes -- and two more in a shootout -- as the Pipers and Gustavus Adolphus skated to a 3-3 OT tie at the MIAC Hockey Showcase in Blaine, Minn. The senior trio of Charlies Adams, Brandon Zurn and Kevin Novakovich scored for the Pipers. The latter two then scored in the unofficial shootout to give Hamline a "win" for the night. (Officially, the NCAA and the MIAC recognizes the result as a tie.)

Sellie-Hanson was sharp from the start. The Pipers were outshot in all three regulation time periods. In the first, Adams opened the scoring, taking passes from Zurn and Mitch Hall at 13:45. GAC, which defeated St. Mary's the night before, tied the game. Novakovich, however, took advantage of power play to score with 1.7 seconds left in the period to give HU a 2-1 edge despite being outshot, 9-5.

Zurn used a nifty deke to make it 3-1 at 3:58 of the second but the Gusties struck 10 minutes later. GAC outshot HU, 16-12, in the open frame.

It remained 3-2 through most of the third period. A late penalty gave GAC a power play that was converted for a goal with 1:47 left.

HU had the extra man chance in the extra session but failed to convert. In the shootout, Sellie-Hanson stymied both GAC shooters while Novakovich and then Zurn were successful with their shots to end the game.

The Pipers killed five of the six power play disadvantages they faced. Conversely, they were just 1-6 themselves on the PP.

Hamline, now 0-0-1, will face St. Mary's (0-1-0)the team they defeated for the MIAC postseason title last March, on Sunday, November 1 in Blaine. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
