Box Score Apparently, no one told
Brandon Zurn or the Hamline men's hockey team unit that Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. The senior forward scored four goals and assisted on a fifth and the Pipers scored a team record seven times (six in the second period alone) en route to a decisive 8-5 victory over St. Mary's at the MIAC Hockey Showcase in Blaine.
Charlie Adams had a goal and an assist and
Jesse Kessler added four assists in this rematch of the teams that met in last year's MIAC postseason championship game.
Justin Quale recorded 30 saves in goal in his first college start to earn the win.
But it was the Piper offense that had people agape.
The first 15 minutes of play resembled last year's title game – tight checking and only a few scoring chances. Then Adams broke free for a power play goal at 15:23 to give HU the lead. The Cardinals tied the game 26 seconds later but Zurn (pictured) untied it with a nifty unassisted shorthanded goal at 18:03.
It was still 2-1 in the second period when Zurn connected twice in a 45 second span – both times on the power play. A major penalty to the Cardinals' Michael Cimba opened at 8:05 opened the floodgates.
In rapid fashion,
Mitch McPherson (8:14),
Jake O'Borsky (10:46), Zurn (12:20) and
Tyler Gonzales (12:39) scored to up the score to 8-1. For McPherson and O'Borsky, it was their first collegiate goals.
The Cardinals came back with four goals in the final nine minutes of the game (two on the power play) to tighten the margin slightly.
But the day belonged to Zurn, who finished the weekend as the early league leader in goals and points. Having recorded one of each in the 3-3 OT tie Saturday with Gustavus, he has five goals and two assists on the season.
HU (1-0-1 overall) now preps itself for MIAC play this weekend with a home and home series against St. Olaf. The teams meet in Northfield Friday night (7:30 p.m. start). They will play at Oscar Johnson Arena Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
