11/6/2015 10:35:00 PM

Box Score This time, winning the shootout meant something. Kevin Novakovich and Brandon Zurn scored on their shots and Justin Quale stopped both tries sent his way as Hamline picked up two points with a 6-5 decision over St. Olaf in Northfield Friday.

Despite holding a huge (48-24) edge in shots on goal, Hamline needed a Garret Schmitz goal to force overtime. After neither team scored in the five minutes, Novakovich and Zurn followed the same script they had used last Saturday against Gustavus Adolphus at the MIAC Showcase.

Chad Hennum had two goals and an assist and Mitch McPherson added a goal and an assist to pace the HU offense. Charlie Adams also scored for HU.

John Sellie-Hanson stopped 14 shots and allowed four goals in 31:32 of play. Quale relieved him in the second period and went the rest of the way, surrendering just one goal while making 10 saves.

Adams' goal in the final minute of the first period gave Hamline a 1-0 lead. The Oles connected twice in the first 98 seconds of the middle frame only to see Hennum score twice and McPherson once in a 82 second span to make it 4-2.

The homestanding Oles responded with the next three goals for a 5-4 lead after two periods.

Schmitz evened matters on a three way play with Novakovich and Hennum at 6:09 of the final period. The Pipers had to fight off a penalty to Jaycob McCombs with 16 seconds left in regulation time.

That eventually led to the shootout where Hamline gained the extra point.

The teams will meet again Saturday at Oscar Johnson Arena. It's the Pipers' home opener. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
