Fact is often more unbelievable than fiction. Hamline men's tennis player
Gabriel Guarin fought off six match points to record a 10-9 win in the third and deciding set. In itself, that is quite a feat. But throw in the note that the win gave the Pipers a 5-4 decision over Concordia and you have a result to remember for a long time.
The Pipers won two of three doubles matches with
David Yanagita and
Cody Jahrig recording an 8-3 at No. 1 and
Jacob Duxbury and
Brandon Kuether scoring an 8-5 win at No. 3.
CC grabbed the first two singles matches with Jahrig evening the score with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. CC won at No. 4 but
Matt Seracki got that one back with a straight set at No. 5.
That left it up to Guarin at No. 6. He won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second by 7-5. He trailed 9-3 in the deciding set when he started rallying ... and never stopped until he got the winning point -- and the match for the Pipers.
Hamline now jumps over the .500 barrier at 8-7 overall, 1-5 in the MIAC. HU takes on St. John's Wednesday in St. Joseph, MN.
