Zurn Joins Century Club as HU Outscores Concordia, 6-4

1/15/2016 9:22:00 PM

Box Score Good things came in bunches Friday for the Hamline men's hockey team. Buzz Tryggeseth and Mitch McPherson scored 28 seconds apart late in the third period to lift the Pipers past Concordia, 6-4, in a wide open MIAC game at Oscar Johnson Arena.

Brandon Zurn had a goal and three assists for HU, which improved to 5-7-4 overall. More importantly, they advanced to 2-4-1 in the MIAC to move within one point of fifth place - the last playoff spot - and handed the Cobbers their first conference loss of the year. Zurn took over the team lead in points with 30 in the process. He also became just the seventh player in school history to record 100 points in a career. In 95 games as a Piper, Zurn has scored 41 goals and assisted on 59 others.

It was a rock 'em, sock 'em game from the start. Chad Hennum struck the first blow just 99 seconds after the first faceoff but the Cobbers tied things up by the end of the frame. Both team took turns killing off penalties and the game remained stuck at 1 until late in the second period. CC grabbed the lead at 15:09. 18 seconds later, Concordia's Charlie Aus was assessed a five minute major penalty for contact to the head. The Pipers took advantage with power play goals by Jesse Kessler and Mitch Hall -- the latter coming with just 10 seconds left in the period.

CC knotted the game at 3 at 9:06 of the third. The deadlock lasted 16 seconds because Zurn finished off a nifty three-way play and Hamline had the lead at 4-3.

CC came back again to tie the game at 13:34, setting up the late game dramatics.

Tryggeseth picked an excellent time for his first collegiate goal, breaking free deep in the offensive zone and picking a corner at 16:35. McPherson then made everybody breathe easier when he blasted his ninth goal of the year from the slot at 17:03.

Hamline outshot Concordia, 35-30, for the game. Goalie Justin Quale recorded 26 saves for the win.

The same two teams face off Saturday at Oscar Johnson. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
