M Hockey Unbeaten Streak Stretches To Six

11/12/2016 9:19:00 PM

Box Score It was just the kind of game a coach likes to see. The HU men's hockey combined a balanced scoring attack, excellent penalty killing with another solid game in goal from Justin Quale to fashion a 5-1 win over Wis-Superior Saturday at Wessman Arena.

HU improved to 4-0-2 overall to remain one of just two MIAC teams still undefeated after three weeks of MIAC play. The six game unbeaten streak is the longest for a Piper team since a team record 11-gamer in the 2010-11 season. Jake O'Borsky had a goal and two assists to lead a 38-shot attack. Brandon Wahlin, Tyler Gonzales, Russ Jordan and Dan Bartkowiak also scored for Hamline, which is off to one of the school's best starts ever in men's hockey.

For his part, Quale kicked out 29 shots to lower his goals-against average to 1.44.

The Pipers didn't  start fast. Wahlin broke the ice with a goal 6:47 into the second period. Jordan continues his hot early play with a power play goal six minutes (a league high sixth of the season) and the Pipers took a 2-0 lead into the final period. UWS came to life with a shorthanded goal midway through that period only to see O'Borsky negate that less than two minutes later, finishing off a three-way play with Chad Hennum and Kerry McGlynn

Hamline then put the game out of reach when Tyler Gonzales unloaded from a sharp angle at 13:29. Bartkowiak sealed matters with an empty net goal. Wahlin led the offensive assault with six shots apiece while Mitch McPherson offered up five.

The Piper penalty killing brigade did their part as well, stopping all six UWS power plays cold.

Hamline now turns its attention back to MIAC play. HU will take its 2-0-0 conference mark to St. Cloud Thursday, November 17 to face St. John's. Game time at the National Ice Center is 7:00 p.m. The teams return to Oscar Johnson the next night for a 7:00 p.m. rematch.
