Box Score It was the perfect setup for failure. Hamline men's hockey team was facing St. Olaf in its first home game at Northfield City Arena for its new head coach, Mike Eaves. Worse yet, the Oles sprinted to a 3-0 advantage that stood at 3-1 after two periods.
The Pipers, however, didn't play along with the script, scoring four third period goals for a 5-4 win that allowed them to remain unbeaten on the 2016-17 season at 3-0-1 (2-0-0 MIAC).
Garrett Schmitz (pictured),
Jesse Kessler,
Mitch McPherson and
Russ Jordan all scored in the final period for the Pipers with
Jaycob McCombs adding the other goal.
John Sellie-Hanson recorded 30 saves for the win in goal.
The game didn't start well. The Oles scored the only goal of the first period and stretched it to 3-0 before McCombs made it 3-1. That was the score entering the third period when the fireworks started. Schmitz made it 3-2 at 2:25 and McPherson tied it 50 seconds later. Kessler then took a pass from Jordan (who had two assists on the night ) to make it 4-3. The Oles responded with a shorthanded goal only to see Jordan register his league leading fifth of the season on a power play at 10:55 to wrap up the scoring. (The junior also leads the league with nine points.) Sellie-Hanson, who had 14 saves in the third period, took care of the rest and the Pipers had the hard-fought win.
HU heads on the road next week for a pair of non-conference games. The Pipers are at Wis-River Falls on Friday, November 11 and travel to Wis-Superior the next night.
