Box Score This was one comeback too many to pull off for the Piper men's hockey team. HU rallied from an early two-goal deficit to tie the score at Augsburg at 2-2 in Saturday night's MIAC semifinal game. But the Auggies responded with three goals in the final seven minutes for a 5-2 win and knocked the Pipers out of the MIAC playoffs.Â
Mitch McPherson and Garrett Schmitz scored for Hamline, which ended the season with a 10-12-5 record.Â
Justin Quale had 33 saves in goal for HU.
Hamline trailed 2-0 until Schmitz took a pass from Brandon Reinholz and buried his fifth goal of the season at 18:58. 56 seconds later, McPherson, who scored twice in Thursday's 3-0 win at Concordia, finished off a three-way play with Brandon Zurn and Jesse Kessler to tie the game entering the final 20 minutes.Â
When Zurn drew that assist on the McPherson goal, he became just the second player in school history to reach 50 points in a season. That total also leads all D-III players in points. The Mahtomedi, Minn. senior finished his HU career with 120 points, fifth best in school history. The Auggies, however, did all the scoring in the third period and advanced to next Saturday's title game. They will host St. John's, a 2-1 OT winner over St. Thomas on Saturday, March 5.. It was the final game for seven Pipers -- Buzz Tryggeseth, Charlie Adams, Cody Mason, Kevin Novakovich, Sam Prpich, Adam Reichert and Zurn.
