ST. PETER, MINN.—The Hamline University men's tennis team participated in day one of the 2022 ITA Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota on Friday.
Isaac Hultberg was the story for Hamline, as he advanced with an 8-6 victory over Hunter Gerhardt (Wartburg) in the opening round of the Midwest Open singles bracket. Hultberg continued to prevail with an 8-1 domination over Josh Fay (MSOE) in the second round. His stellar day continued in the ITA doubles bracket, where he and Tyler Rousslang dug themselves out of a 4-7 hole to secure an 8-7 victory over Lucas Wood/Liam Lynch (Macalester).
"Isaac and Tyler fought off two match points before defeating Macalester in front of a packed house at the Gustavus Tennis Center," said Hamline head tennis coach Spencer Jones.
Rousslang's stellar day also consisted of a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to JP Rosaldo (Luther) in the Midwest Open Singles bracket. Liam Smith also came up just short in an 8-6 decision to Jack Guerkink (Northwestern (Minn.).)
"Both Smith and Rousslang battled really hard against older and more experienced opponents," said Jones. "Both matches could have gone either way."
