Derek Lutz and
Dylan Sperry proved to be double trouble for St. Mary's Friday night. The pair won their singles matches in dramatic fashion and teamed up for a doubles win in the Pipers' 6-3 loss to the Cardinals in Winona.
Lutz rallied to win at No. 3 singles. After losing the first set 4-6, he came back for 6-3 and 10-8 decisions. Sperry worked even harder, claiming the first set 7-6 (with a 7-3 tiebreaker), dropping the second set 2-6 and then outlasting his opponent, 11-9 in the third set.
The pair then teamed up for a solid 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
It was a case of what-might-have-been for HU.
David Croonquist, Tyler Antil and
Jesse Bragg all lost in tight three set matches in singles.
The Pipers fell to 2-6 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC. They resume action March 24 against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in Orlando, Fla.
