ST. PETER, Minn. --- Hamline men's tennis competed at the ITA Midwest Regionals Oct. 2-4, highlighted by Truman Vogel winning the Midwest Open "B" Singles Championship.
Vogel Takes the B Singles Title
Vogel opened the tournament with straight-set wins on day one, beating John Gufstason of Wartburg 6-0, 6-2 and David Castro of UW-Eau Claire 6-4, 6-3. He kept it going in the Round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over August Nelson of UW-Stevens Point. On the final day, he defeated Zachary Regelman of Macalester 6-4, 6-2, then closed out the championship by beating Bernardo Born of Carthage 7-6(6), 6-1.
Doubles Highlights
Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring led the ITA doubles draw. They opened with a tight 8-7(6) win over Carthage's #9 pair of Linus Bangert and Ethan Foucheaux, then beat Carroll's Carl Sandelin and Nate Christensen 8-4 on Saturday. Their run ended in the Round of 16 against the top-ranked team of Knutson and Mwhwandagara from Gustavus, 8-3.
Max Gulliford and Matthew George also advanced in ITA doubles, beating Carroll's Carl Oback and Ulrik Gellein 8-6 before falling to #5 Ethan Ellor and Christian Wong of Gustavus Adolphus 8-3 in the third round.
In Midwest doubles, Cale Vogel and Wesley Saunders won three straight, defeating Luther's Keaton Nalean-Carlson and Davis Rovn 8-3, Edgewood's Jon Olafsson and Marek Woytasik 8-5, and MSOE's Lukas Axelsson and Mats Peeters 8-5 to reach the quarterfinals. They were stopped there by St. Olaf's Daniel Meunier and Jake Schultz, 8-5.
Singles Results
- ITA Singles: Gulliford beat Lawrence's Benjamin Hoppe 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Macalester's #9 Charles Flaman. Crowell lost to Gustavus' Ethan Ellor 6-2, 6-3.
- Midwest B Singles: Beyond Vogel's title run, Cale Vogel fell to Macalester's Kangyu Li 6-3, 1-6, 1-0(6), and Sebring lost to Gustavus' Eli Olson 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(7). George dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Gustavus' Karl Kimber.
- Midwest E Singles: Saunders won a three-setter over Lawrence's Tristin Yun, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0(5), before losing to Tegan Schott of Saint Mary's 7-5, 6-3.
- Midwest F Singles: Liam Smith beat Lawrence's Xander Priest 6-1, 6-0 before losing to Pepe Coiras of Bethany Lutheran 6-2, 6-2. Cooper Held fell to Carroll's Brayden Richardson 6-4, 6-4.
- Midwest G Singles: Sam Siegel beat Simpson's Seth Orta 6-1, 6-2, then lost to UW-Eau Claire's Peyton Sheffert 7-5, 6-4.
Consolation Play
Siegel won his consolation opener over Loghyn Schroder of Concordia, 8-7(4), but fell to Grady Sola of Bethel 8-4. Held lost to Concordia's Brandt Anderson 8-2, and Smith lost to Drake Wonderling of Saint Mary's 8-5.
