Dylan Sperry and Derek Lutz scored singles wins for Hamline in a 7-2 loss to St. Scholastica in the men's tennis opening match of the season Saturday at the U of Minnesota.
Both players had to do it the hard way. Sperry, elevated to No. 1 singles, took the first set 6-4 but dropped the second one, 3-6. He then rallied for a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker. Lutz, playing No. 2 singles, followed a similar pattern, winning 6-3 before taking a 4-6 loss. He rallied for a 10-6 win in the third set.
The Pipers were swept in their doubles matches (all by 8-5). They also dropped the last four singles matches in straight sets.
