Box Score As darkness was starting to settle on Paterson Field Monday, HU men's soccer forwardÂ
Liam Whitworth was seeing the light. The junior found an opening from 12 yards away, courtesy of an
Oscar Campbell (5) pass and fired home the gamewinning goal with 10 seconds to play in the second half to lift Hamline to a 2-1 victory over Finlandia in the regular season finale for both teams Monday.Â
The Pipers will take an 8-8-2 overall record into their first MIAC playoff appearance since 2007 when they play at St. Olaf (10-7-1). Game time is 2:00 p.m.
Hamline head coachÂ
Alex Morawiecki substituted liberally in the game, using 21 players.Â
Peter Griggs made his first start ever in goal, playing 70:39 and earning the win.Â
The Lions came out anxious to avenge a 3-0 loss Sunday at St. Mary's. The Pipers responded in kind and the freewheeling first half resulted in a total of 16 shots taken, nine of which landed on goal. Campbell opened the scoring with his second of the season at 30:26, finishing off a three way passing play withÂ
Matt Simeon andÂ
Jordan Wik. The :Lions tied the game five minutes later and it remained that until the dramatic end.Â
Campbell, who spent the day rotating between the back wall and sneaking into the play near the net, started it with a nice pass to Whitworth, positioned to the right. The Ohioan did the rest for his first netter of the season to decide the matter.Â
The Pipers enter the playoffs as the fifth seed based on their 5-4-1 MIAC mark. They return to Northfield to face an Ole team that bested them, 3-1, on September 29.Â
Trevor Tallaksen scored for Hamline in that game, which was knotted at 1 until the Oles scored a pair of goals 10 minutes midway in the second half. But the Pipers shook that game off to win five of their next seven games and advance to the postseason.Â
