Box Score It was the kind of play only certain players can do.Â
Jake Niemann broke away from a pile and rocketed a 20-yarder into the corner of the net and helped Hamline's men's soccer team earn its first point against Macalester in eight years with a 1-1 double OT tie at Paterson Field Saturday.Â
81 seconds into the second half, Niemann took a
James Reardon pass and boomed a shot into the upper right corner of the net. It looked like that was going to be enough for a win but the Scots, who have not lost in eight games this season, came back to tie the game 3:44 remaining in regulation time. After a pair of hectic overtimes that saw HU goalieÂ
Dean Isaacson make two of his six saves in the game and the Pipers crank a shot off the goalpost, the teams settled for the deadlock. It was HU's first points agianst the traditional MIAC men's soccer power since a 2-0 win in 2007.Â
Â
It was a rugged affair that featured 30 fouls and six yellow cards. Hamline held a large 10-4 edge in corner kicks, including 3-0 in the extra periods. It was on one of those corners early in the second OT when Niemann snuck behind a MAC defender and headed a shot perfectly that struck the goalpost and bounced out.Â
The Pipers are now 1-0-1 in MIAC play, 2-4-2 overall. They play at St. Olad on September 29 at 4:00 p.m. before returning home to face St. Thomas on Saturday, October 3 in a 11:00 a.m. start.Â
